In search of a lost meaning

The intentionality of the mind creates the possibility of meaning.

— John Searle, Intentionality: An Essay in the Philosophy of Mind

Where has meaning gone from our lives? This is a question many of us have reason to ask ourselves. So much confusion, complexity and nonsense. Let's face it — our world is a terrible mess, and we are all very much in it. Yet many of us strongly sense the existence and possibility of a greater meaning both behind and beyond our mixed-up experience of everyday life. There is a thread of meaning running through our lives and connecting us to a higher order of things, yet this strand is so twisted and entangled, as it is, that instead of leading us to freedom it has become our bondage. Such is the irony and paradox of our existence; surrounded by infinite freedom, we feel stuck and stranded. Cocooned in a vast universal network of light, at a more personal level we are pulled into a locus of darkness. With difficulty we seem to thrust our way ahead, only to find ourselves still trapped in heavy and intricate shadows of meaninglessness. But even when the chaotic forces of the nether world seem to engulf us from all sides, we don't let go, we don't give in, we make a valiant stand. We continue in our struggle for meaning, light and truth. Someone said, “Vitality amid despair surfaces with a tenacious resolve to press onward.” Indeed, we press ever onward.

The Great Onward Press celebrates the vitality of the human mind and spirit, and celebrates the enormous, gloriously confusing and complex world that we are a part of. If you have a fundamental passion for learning, knowing, thinking and searching — well, along with a slight penchant for zaniness — you would probably enjoy the game! Read, and see your mind and spirit freed — from the shackles of ignorance.

O truth of the earth,
O truth of things,
I am determined to press my way toward you;
Sound your voice!

I scale mountains,
or dive in the sea after you.
